The British - An Island Race
It's amazing isn't it... Boat people being drowned by the hundreds, ISIL running amock in Iraq and Syria (and wanting to also get into Europe!) and the on-going and appalling Israel/Palestine situation - all originating because of Western interference without understanding longer term issues - and yet we Brits are worrying about the SNP. Or at least, the Tories say we should be worried about the SNP.
We're still an island race, aren't we?
With Labour and the Liberals also still behaving as they always have done since I can remember (60 years), isn't it time that we welcomed someone who has the rectitude to state it as it is? Yes, I agree Ms. Sturgeon has a certain programme of her own that she'd like us to take note of, but I do sense that she and her party have more of a One Nation feeling about them than certainly the Tories. If the Tories are so worried they should have tried harder to win their own seats in Scotland, I say.
John Major has just said that members of the Tory Party are the most caring people he knows. Well, they may care about certain things but it certainly isn't whether people are demonised because they have to claim benefits, or whether disabled people are turfed out because of their inability to keep up with the bedroom tax, or the NHS, firefighting and teaching staff that are so stressed out that they are having record time off. In fact, we now know that many teachers are leaving the profession after only 12 months as they cannot stand the stress of it all.
And we know of people that are sanctioned at the Job Centre because they are thought not to be chasing enough jobs, despite the fact that they are really too old and living in such squalor that they cannot present themselves in decent attire for a job interview.
This is the so-called One Nation State and "We Are In It Together" attitude that we have been living in this past 5 years, and the beauty of it all is that the Tories weren't even elected into office! The Liberals made it possible for them to do what they have done.
Yes, cutting the nation's debt is a very worthwhile target, but they said they would eliminate it in one term of office. Have they heck! It feels as though they must have because of the stringent measures they introduced (letting the well-off completely off the hook), but we're still a long way short. And the Tories intend to implement another 12bn worth of cuts if they come into office. They won't say what is to be cut, but I think we know. Our grannies and grandfathers will be invited to live on a desert island, I expect! Or worse.
The Tories do not say anything worth listening about in respect of Climate Change - they're more happy if Jaguar/Land-Rover export powerful cars to China. But, sadly, the most likely party to provide the next prime minister - the Labour Party - also is not too bright about green policies either.
So, a Labour majority party with a working agreement with the other left and middle parties would appear to be the best we can hope for. It's certainly a lot better proposition than the Tories having another sniff at the nation's coffers.
